Overview: Que veut dire décoloniser ?Au sens premier, classique, c'est abandonner un territoire occupé à la suite d'une conquête.La décolonisation, entre les années quarante et soixante, a connu son heure de gloire et provoqué une célébration des vertus libératrices et démocratiques des anciennes métropoles, alias puissances coloniales. Consenties par accord réciproque, par négociation, par fatigue, ou arrachées par la force, les indépendances reconfiguraient le monde. L'Organisation des Nations Unies se voyait envahie de nouveaux venus. La France, en la matière, pouvait se prévaloir d'une riche et ancienne expérience, depuis le Code noir de Louis XIV jusqu'à l'Algérie. Cette mère-là avait décidément beaucoup de petits, dont Francis Arzalier établit impeccablement la liste, dénuée de tout humanisme. Mais perdre une guerre, comme ce fut le cas avec l'Algérie, ne signifie pas rompre tout lien.Décoloniser ne se confond pas avec fermer la porte. Au contraire, en fonction des conjonctures économiques, haute ou basse, on a eu affaire à deux types de situations. La première consistait à ponctionner, dans leur pays, des travailleurs à livrer aux entreprises, pour des emplois peu rémunérés, de la même façon que l'on avait massivement envoyé en première ligne des soldats de l'Empire durant les deux dernières guerres mondiales. La production, pas plus que la guerre, ne valait reconnaissance et, dans le second cas, même pas le droit à une retraite «du combattant» décente. L'autre modalité, en partie seulement liée à la précédente, concernait le phénomène de l'immigration. Les ex-colonisés, chassés de chez eux par la misère sociale ou la persécution politique, venaient s'installer à plein temps, chez nous, avec femme, enfants, langue, culture et religion, qui paraissaient fort indigestes, à l'inverse de la cuisine, bien vite nationalisée, quant à elle, puisque le dernier des racistes se régalait de couscous et que les enfants des écoles croyaient qu'il s'agissait là d'un plat typiquement national. Une sorte d'invasion à l'envers se produisait, le refoulé (colonial) faisant retour (en dépit de la décolonisation), et la forteresse (ex-colonisatrice) ne parvenant pas, malgré de nombreuses «politiques de l'immigration», de plus en plus draconiennes, à contenir le flux. La chose devenait d'autant plus complexe que les immigrés en question n'étaient majoritairement plus des étrangers mais bel et bien des Français.

Really enjoyed this one. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Would probably read it again at some point.
