Overview: Aantekeningen uit het ondergrondse is een sleutelwerk in het oeuvre van Dostojevski. De schrijver trekt fel van leer tegen wat we tegenwoordig ‘de maakbaarheid van de mens’ noemen. Het eerste deel is één lang requisitoir, in ritmisch, hamerend proza, tegen de theorieën van verlichtingsfilosofen als Rousseau, maar vooral die van Dostojevski’s tijdgenoot Tsjernysjevski, die verkondigde dat de mens, als hij maar rationeel en verstandig handelt, op den duur gelukkig zal worden. Aan het woord is een ex-ambtenaar die zich teruggetrokken heeft in een smerige kamer ergens aan de rand van de stad. In totale vereenzaming (zijn ‘ondergrondse’) broedt hij daar zijn dwarse ideeën uit. Hij pleit voor de vrije wil, tegen het rationalisme. Twee maal twee is vier is voortreffelijk, zegt hij, maar twee maal twee is vijf is ook heel aardig. Het tweede deel speelt twintig jaar eerder. De man haalt enkele voorvallen op die hij verdrongen had. Hiermee illustreert hij zijn theorie: tegen zijn eigen belang in maakt hij zichzelf belachelijk. Hij verliest zijn masker en zijn gezicht tegenover een paar oude vrienden, een hoer, en zijn huisknecht. Toon en setting van Aantekeningen uit het ondergrondse zijn typisch Dostojevskiaans. De lezer raakt verzeild in een koortsdroom, in een psychische crisis waaruit geen ontsnappen mogelijk lijkt. Fjodor Michailovitsj Dostojevski (1821-1881) is waarschijnlijk de bekendste en wellicht de meest omstreden Russische romanschrijver. Zijn Misdaad en straf (Schuld en boete), De broers Karamazov, De idioot en Demonen behoren tot de canon van de wereldliteratuur. Monse Weijers vertaalde een twintigtal boeken uit het Russisch, onder andere van Alexander Poesjkin en Tsjingiz Ajtmatov. I was pleasantly surprised. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. A solid 5/5 for me.
