Overview: "Ein als Hauptmann verkleideter Mensch führte gestern eine von Tegel kommende Abteilung Soldaten nach dem Köpenicker Rathaus, ließ den Bürgermeister verhaften, beraubte die Gemeindekasse und fuhr in einer Droschke davon." So zu lesen am 17. Oktober 1906 in den Berliner Zeitungen. Dieser Mensch hieß Wilhelm Voigt. In jungen Jahren war der Schustergeselle aus Not mit dem Gesetz in Konflikt geraten. 15 Jahre Zuchthaus waren die Strafe dafür, daß er die Reichspost um 300 Mark geschädigt hatte: Er geriet in den Teufelskreis der Bürokratie. Ohne ordentliche Abmeldung fand er nirgends Arbeit, ohne Arbeitsnachweis erhielt er keine Anmeldung. Voigt wird wieder straffällig; mit 56 Jahren hat er mehr als 30 Jahre seines Lebens im Zuchthaus verbracht. In diesem Augenblick seines Lebens stößt er auf jene Uniform im Trödlerladen in der Berliner Grenadierstraße, die von nun an sein weiteres Schicksal bestimmen wird.Dieses Deutsche Märchen erschien zum erstenmal 1931; es ist heute eines der bekanntesten Stücke Zuckmayers. Die Verfilmung, mit Heinz Rühmann in der Hauptrolle, ist vielen Zuschauern unvergeßlich.

Finished it in a couple of days. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Worth the time and money.
