Overview: După cum se poate deduce şi din titlu, cartea „La început a fost cuvântul Ardeal“ este dedicată unei mult controversate probleme privitoare la etnogeneza Ardealului.Cartea este rodul unor îndelungate tatonări şi se referă la originea şi istoria unei denumiri „cheie“ din vechiul strat al limbii românilor ce aparţine limbii tracilor.Această monografie a apărut ca rezultat al tendinţei de a înţelege şi a interpreta noile posibilităţi deschise în faţa lingvisticii în urma studierii mai profunde a o serie de limbi indoeuropene şi neindoeuropene, însă care au scos la iveală date inaccesibile prin forţa lucrurilor lingvisticii din trecut.Tema originii şi soartei Ardealului, precum şi cea a ardelenilor, este foarte vastă şi complexă, motiv pentru care nu poate fi epuizată într-un mic articolaş, cum adesea s-a încercat până acum de către unii specialişti sau diletanţi. Obiectul ce se află în atenţia noastră este, fără îndoială, de un înalt grad de dificultate. Răspunzând unor noi cerinţe, unor noi comenzi sociale, tema în discuţie a suscitat şi suscită şi în prezent discuţii aprinse din cauza complexităţii unor probleme a căror rezolvare unitară devine greu de realizat. Cu toate acestea amânarea discuţiilor pe tema propusă nu vine în interesul ştiinţei, în cazul nostru al lingvisticii şi istoriei. Acumulările care au avut loc în acest domeniu permit o tratare la un nou nivel. Amintim în acest sens că în ultimele decenii au apărut unele articole (nu prea numeroase), în care au fost avansate unele ipoteze noi, în care se simte un suflu nou, mai apropiate de cele propuse de autorul acestei cărţi. Pe această linie considerăm un fapt normal urmărirea cu atenţie a opiniilor unor oameni de ştiinţă (de diferite specialităţi), care şi-au îndreptat eforturile în direcţia rezolvării originii numelui entopic Ardeal.Nu întâmplător am considerat potrivit să adunăm într-o singură carte ceea ce se află pentru tema discutată, materialul risipit în diferite reviste sau cărţi, greu accesibile, iar uneori inaccesibile cititorului de rând. Venind întru întâmpinarea cititorului am înţeles necesitatea de a selecta şi aduna ideile care au circulat şi mai circulă pe această temă, în ţara noastră, dar şi în alte ţări, pe care ne-am străduit să le aprofundam, să le aducem la zi. Preluând critic (relativ) tot ce s-a scris în acest domeniu, am încercat să venim, acolo unde a fost posibil, cu soluţii noi şi cu un alt tip de rezolvări.Abordând problema etimologiei unui cuvânt atât de vechi, cum este cuvântul Ardeal, autorul s-a simţit obligat să dea unele explicaţii în legătură cu înţelegerea de către el a materialului lingvistic, a raporturilor lingvistice din trecut, a tabloului general al acestor raporturi în concepţia altor cercetători.Aşa cum se va putea constata pe parcursul cărţii „La început a fost cuvântul Ardeal“, în stabilirea unei etimologii sunt necesare comparaţii şi analogii cu forme similare din limba respectivă sau din alte limbi, înrudite sau neînrudite. Pe parcursul lucrării ne vom strădui să dăm un răspuns la mult vehiculata întrebare: cine a creat acest numele „Ardeal“ şi cui aparţine? Problema devine actuală nu numai din punctul de vedere al planului etimologic, ci şi în planul real semantic, precum şi din alte puncte de vedere. Criteriul semantic este partea cea mai complicată şi mai dificilă în cercetarea etimologică, probabil şi pentru faptul că este compartimentul cel mai puţin studiat al limbii.Etnonimul Ardeal, la fel ca şi alte denumiri, româneşti sau de altă origine, continuă să fie încă neclar. Acest fapt nu trebuie să ne neliniştească pentru că multe alte cuvinte continuă să aibă o origine incertă, iar altele sunt introduse în dicţionare cu origine necunoscută. Unele dintre acestea au ieşit de mult din uz, altele, în cel mai bun caz, se păstrează în onomastică. De aici şi interesul deosebit faţă de materialul onomastic care are un rol de seamă în studierea lexicului comun. Este îndeobşte cunoscut că cu cât un termen toponimic este mai vechi, cu atât este mai mare probabilitatea că el a ajuns la noi într-o formă modificată sau sub un aspect cu totul alterat.În altă ordine de idei, amintim aici faptul îndeobşte cunoscut că, cu cât o stâncă, o piatră este mai veche, cu atât ea este mai rezistentă. Numai aşa se explică perpetuarea ei peste veacuri şi chiar milenii. Tot astfel se poate interpreta şi cauza vechimii poporului român, rezistenţei lui impuse de intemperiile istoriei, numai datorită vigurozităţii sale şi a numărului său mare a reuşit să reziste tuturor vicisitudinilor şi să nu fie zdrobit de călcâiul papucului istoriei.Restabilirea istoriei dezvoltării culturii materiale se realizează în comun cu rezultatele arheologice, cu cele ale istoriei, etnografiei şi lingvisticii, păstrându-şi ca orice reconstrucţie caracterul ei ipotetic. În aspectul urmărit fiecare dintre ramurile amintite ale ştiinţei, precum şi altele nemenţionate, îşi au avantajele şi dezavantajele lor, au anumite limite şi prin urmare, numai împreună se pot completa reciproc şi, controlându-şi concluziile, pot obţine rezultatele scontate.
