Overview: Alex Kawilarang (geboren 1920) is de zoon van een Menadonese KNIL-officier. Voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog deed hij in Bandung de HBS-V en de CORO- en KMA-opleiding. Hij ontsnapte uit het krijgsgevangenkamp en wist verder zijn verleden voor de Jappen verborgen te houden. Stap voor stap begon tijdens de Japanse bezetting ook bij hem het nationalisme te leven.Na de oorlog sloot hij zich aan bij het leger van de Republiek. Gedurende agressie-I was hij in West-Java brigadecommandant van de Siliwangi Divisie (de tegenstander van de 7 December Divisie). Tijdens agressie-II en de soevereiniteitsoverdracht was hij troepencommandant en territoriaal bevelhebber in Tapanuli en Oost-Sumatra. Daarna was hij commandant TTC-Oost-Indonesië en kreeg te maken met zulke problemen als de 'coup' van Andi Azis in Makassar, de opstandige RMS en de rebellen van Kahar Muzakkar.Midden jaren '50 werd hij commandant van de Siliwangi Divisie. Glad someone recommended this to me. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. A solid 5/5 for me.

It was just alright. Some parts were interesting, while others were a bit of a slog to get through. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.

A solid read. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Still a good book.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
