Discover John the Baptist: A Life and Death by Josephine Wilkinson. Start reading today and explore ideas, insights, and experiences that stay with you.

Overview: This book traces the transformation of John the Baptist from a Jewish apocalyptic prophet into the forerunner of Christ; as such it contributes to studies into the Historical Jesus, the New Testament Studies and Second Temple Judaism. It opens with an Introduction outlining the history of the field and the current state of research. Chapter One places John within the context of Second Temple Judaism. His role as a prophet in the desert tradition is examined, compared and contrasted with those of his predecessors and those who came after him. Chapter Two is a study of John’s baptism, comparing it with lustration rites prescribed in Torah and those used by John’s contemporaries. It shows how Jewish understanding of sin, repentance and purity influenced John’s rite and discusses what secondary functions the baptism might have had. Chapter Three looks at John’s announcement of the coming of another and asks who this person might have been and what he was expected to do. It also surveys the various human and supernatural judgement/restoration figures expected in various strands of Judaism. The spirit-and-fire baptism of the Coming One is also discussed. In Chapter Four, the question of whether John really baptised Jesus is discussed before the implications of Jesus’ submission to a baptism designed for the forgiveness of sins are considered. It also tries explores what the experience of Baptism meant for Jesus. Chapter Five asks at which point Jesus embarked upon his own career: was it immediately after his baptism or some while later? It also asks if Jesus’ ministry was influenced by John’s or entirely independent; did Jesus reinterpret John’s message or reject it? Chapter Six looks at the arrest, imprisonment and execution of John the Baptist. It asks why the evangelists included an account of the incident in their Gospels, and discusses its implications for John’s baptising ministry as well as that of Jesus. Chapter Seven explores the methods by which the evangelists transformed John the Baptist from a desert apocalyptic prophet and baptiser into the forerunner of Christ. Taking each Gospel in turn, it focuses upon the literary structure in which John the Baptist is placed and his depiction as Elijah-redivivus. Finally, Chapter Eight shows how the trends begun by the evangelists were continued by the early Church Fathers and beyond. This chapter also introduces a heretofore neglected concealment tradition surrounding John the Baptist, which is connected to his role of forerunner. The book includes a concluding chapter, notes and a full bibliography
