Overview: Einst hielt es die Philosophie für ihre vornehmste Aufgabe, Menschen zu einem bewussten Verhältnis zu sich und ihrem Leben anzuleiten – um auch zu einem angemessenen Umgang mit anderen in der Lage zu sein. Schmid knüpft an die große Tradition der Philosophie wieder an: „Mit sich selbst befreundet sein“, davon sprach schon Aristoteles. „Lebenskunst im Umgang mit sich selbst“: Das ist die Tradition Senecas, Montaignes und Nietzsches. Heute erscheint das Selbst als wunder Punkt im Geflecht der Zeit, als größte Schwachstelle der modernen Gesellschaft. Es hat sein Selbstverständnis verloren, das aus vormoderner Tradition, Konvention, Religion stammte und noch weit in die Moderne hineinragte. Schmids Buch handelt vom Umgang mit sich selbst und wie er erlernt werden kann, ausgehend von der existenziellen Erfahrung der Angst und der möglichen Antwort darauf. Kaum ein Aspekt wird dabei außer Acht gelassen. Seit langem hat kein Philosoph mehr so gründlich und umfassend, so systematisch wie poetisch über das Verhältnis des Einzelnen zu sich selbst nachgedacht. Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Glad I picked this up.

An average read for me. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. It's fine if you have nothing else to read.
