Overview: This paper was originally delivered at an invited session of the 86th Annual Meeting of the American Anthropological Association in Chicago, 21 November 1987. The invitationcame from Professor Katherine Verdery of Johns Hopkins, to whom I am most grateful.The session was entitled "Anthropology's Interlocutors: Edward Said and Representations of the Colonized," and was chaired and organized by Professor William Roseberry (New School) and Talal Asad (Hull), who also participated in the discussion. Discussants were Professors Ann Stoler, Richard Fox, Renato Rosaldo, and Paul Rabinow.

A very satisfying read. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.

A very satisfying read. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Would probably read it again at some point.
