Overview: Tresor nel senso di scrigno pieno d'oro e di gioielli, una raccolta di beni spirituali preziosi: la filosofia teorica, «denaro contante»; la filosofia pratica e la logica, «pietre preziose»; la retorica e la politica, «oro fino». L'opera più famosa di Brunetto Latini è di fatto un'enciclopedia medievale scritta in forma abrégée rispetto alle trattazioni latine del XIII secolo, come lo Speculum di Vincenzo di Beauvais, perché al pubblico della nuova cultura laica di mercanti, amministratori, giudici e notai (come Brunetto) servivano strumenti più agili e compendiati. Per la stessa ragione Brunetto non scrive il suo trattato in latino, ma in francese, la lingua emergente di allora, non essendo ancora il toscano, prima di Dante, una lingua abbastanza strutturata per potervi sostenere un'opera impegnativa in prosa. La storia universale, la medicina, le scienze naturali, la geografia, l'agricoltura, l'architettura, il bestiario di tutti gli animali conosciuti: sono materie in cui Brunetto si dimostra supremo divulgatore. Ma il cuore dell'opera risiede nelle parti sull'etica e sulla politica. La retorica come fondamento dell'arte di governo è uno snodo che caratterizza le idee nuove di Brunetto, mutuate dalle antiche di Aristotele e Cicerone. Porre la cultura classica a fondamento della gestione del potere nelle società comunali italiane significava avviare un processo che avrebbe avuto un lungo sviluppo e conseguenze durature. E per questo si può dire che Brunetto non fu soltanto «padre» di Dante, ma capostipite di un rinnovamento della cultura italiana che avrebbe riguardato molte generazioni.Questa è la prima edizione italiana integrale in età moderna. I have mixed feelings about this one. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Just right down the middle.
