Nesta obra, Karl Marx analisa um período longo e extremamente movimentado da história francesa, apresentando algumas experiências conceitualmente importantes da Revolução de 1848-1849 e seus resultados. Assim como O 18 de brumário de Luiz Bonaparte e A guerra civil na França, a presente obra é considerada parte do que foi convencionado chamar “obras históricas” de Marx. Segundo Caio N. Toledo, professor da Unicamp, autor do texto de orelha, não se deve relegar tais obras a um lugar secundário ou menor no conjunto da produção teórica marxiana. Para ele, são nesses escritos que se evidencia “de forma nítida e sistemática aquilo que distingue e particulariza o marxismo de todas as teorias conhecidas, qual seja a indissociável relação entre a análise científica da realidade histórica e social e a perspectiva radical e transformadora”.
