Overview: En el año 2007 se desencadenó en México una crisis de seguridad cuya magnitud hubiese sido inimaginable apenas unos meses atrás. La violencia ocupó el centro de la vida pública como nunca antes no en el pasado reciente por lo menos. Junto con la crisis apareció un nuevo lenguaje, una nueva manera de entender la delincuencia, la legalidad, la justicia, el orden político. Ha sido un cambio mayor, pero difícil de valorar. Ese cambio es la materia de estas páginas. El eje del libro es la crisis de seguridad, porque es lo que se impone como eje del presente. Pero no es ni una crónica ni una explicación del crimen organizado, ni de la lucha contra el crimen organizado: es un análisis de los lenguajes en que se explican una cosa y otra. Desde luego, la violencia es real. El crimen organizado es real, el negocio de las drogas es real, y el combate de la fuerza pública contra el crimen organizado es absolutamente real. Pero todo ello tiene también una dimensión imaginaria, es decir, todo ello se elabora en el espacio público, en un lenguaje que tiene sus sobreentendidos, sus implícitos y su lado opaco, sus fantasías, prejuicios, estereotipos y automatismos. Eso significa que debajo del negocio de la droga, por decirlo de algún modo, debajo de lo que llamamos crimen organizado, debajo de la guerra contra el crimen organizado están sucediendo otras cosas, que no se ven bien y no se entienden bien, o no se entienden en absoluto. En este libro hay tan sólo el intento de ver con un poco más de claridad lo que hay detrás de las palabras. Porque el nuevo lenguaje se impuso al mismo tiempo que se producía un aumento catastrófico de la violencia en el país, y no es aventurado suponer que la opacidad de ese lenguaje sea de algún modo parte del problema.

Pretty good overall. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. I'd probably recommend it to a friend.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
