Overview: Student research project from 2010 in the field of music - other, grade: 2.0, University of Basel (Institute for Musicology), event: The discovery of chromaticism in the 16th century, language: German, abstract: The intentions of this scientific work, the two different compositions come very close, are based on the opacity of the understanding of music of that period, which marks the transition between the Renaissance and the Baroque. This primarily refers to the reception of Carlo Gesualdo - Prince of Venosa - who is generally remembered by posterity as the musician driven to despair by murder and jealousy. The monstrous deed happened in 1590 when Gesualdo killed his young wife Maria d' Avalos and her lover were caught red-handed after a fake hunting trip and murdered in cold blood in the presence of his hunting party. Later in his life, now suffering from depression and delusions, the composer retired to his eponymous castle, where his life, isolated and lonely, came to an end in 1613. Since then, Gesualdo's work has always been overshadowed by his stirring biography. His compositions are extravagant and ahead of their time, the main focus of which is on a total of six published madrigal volumes. Highly chromatic structures are combined here with a harsh language of harmony and the result is music that is always pervaded by strong emotions. His expressive creative power thus experiences a psychological interpretation in the shock of his life.

A solid read. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Still a good book.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Worth the time and money.

Good, but not quite perfect. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. A solid 4 stars from me.
