Overview: Cuando en 1999 Almudena Grandes inició una nueva serie de artículos en El País Semanal y quiso dotarlos de un hilo conductor, enseguida pensó que algo tan cercano y fascinante como un mercado de abastos podría servirle como marco ideal para poblarlo con «los humildes afanes y trabajos de la cotidianidad más estricta». Escogió entonces el céntrico Mercado de Barceló, situado en un reconocible barrio madrileño, y lo convirtió en un microcosmos de pequeñas historias, pero también en un infalible sismógrafo sociológico, que recogía indirectamente preocupaciones y tendencias encarnadas en personajes y conversaciones. Cerrada la serie a finales de 2002, este libro reúne una cuidada selección de aquellas crónicas y relatos.Como sostiene la propia Almudena Grandes, a un novelista le basta con observar con detenimiento lo que sucede a su alrededor para descubrir tras cada persona con la que se cruza, o tras cada conversación a la que sin querer asiste, un conflicto o un argumento. I was pleasantly surprised. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Will be looking for more from this author.
