Overview: În Forme Simple..., Jolles abordează problematica formei, ca o categorie a expresiei poetice; cartea acestuia este o cercetare în domeniul etnologiei şi se concentreză pe nouă forme preliterare, în încercarea de a stabili formele primare ale expresiei folclorice. J. Culler afirma despre această carte că este una „extrem de umană şi inteligentă, care încearcă să definească nouă forme elementare, preliterare, fiecare dintre ele rezultând dintr-o dispoziţie mentală particulară în care se regăseşte experienţa prin care devine completă şi inteligibilă”.Pe când Hans Robert Jauss a interpretat formele simple ca fiind un sistem social şi cultural, care nu poate revendica o universalitate arhetipică, alţi teoreticieni (Bausinger, Ranke) le compară cu arhetipurile lui Jung, întrucât ar reprezenta manifestarea proceselor inconştientului uman, respectiv a raportului dintre conştient şi inconştient. Jolles propune însă un canon de nouă forme simple, paradigme ce stau la baza literaturii: legenda sacră, legenda eroică, mitul, ghicitoarea, zicala, cazul, memorabilul, basmul, gluma, care trebuie însă delimitate de speciile literare cu acelaşi nume. O formă simplă este o formă preliterară şi constă dintr-o componentă psihomentală, îndeletnicirea spiritului, o structură mentală independentă de factori temporali sau culturali, şi expresia ei verbală corespunzătoare, fizionomiile verbale. Metoda de identificare a formelor simple, propusă de Jolles, este analiza realizărilor acestora în literatură, realizări care poartă pecetea alegerilor personale ale autorului şi a melanjului cu alte forme. În această interpretare, literatura ar fi un sistem de structuri simple şi complexe, care, deşi par a avea un caracter fix, se află într-o continuă mişcare şi pot fi identificate doar printr-o analiză a limbajului literar, a fizionomiilor verbale.

I have mixed feelings about this one. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Just right down the middle.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
