Overview: In de eerste helft van de achttiende eeuw heerste er grote bestuurlijke wanorde in de kolonie Suriname met als hoogtepunt de tijd van gouverneur Mauricius, die letterlijk werd weggepest door een groep rijke planters, die hij de 'Cabale' noemde en die volgens hem werden aangevoerd door de weduwe Audra. Dat is wat wij vroeger op school leerden bij de geschiedenislessen. Toch was er een slavin die ongewild getuige was van deze wunyu wunyu (lawaai, ophef). Dat was Zenobia, die als meisje van Berg en Dal naar Paramaribo werd meegenomen door misi Graman, de latere weduwe Audra, die trouwde met drie gouverneurs en twee dominees. Via Zenobia krijgen we inzicht in het leven van de notabelen wier dagen gevuld waren met feesten en partijen, ruzies, onenigheden, gekibbel en beuzelarijen, terwijl slaven moesten zwoegen om dit mogelijk te maken. Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

I was pleasantly surprised. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Glad I picked this up.

A solid read. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Enjoyable weekend read.
