Overview: L’antropòleg Gustau Nerín ha aconseguit posar al descobert l’activitat dels negrers espanyols a la costa africana durant el segle XIX. Entre els negrers, hi havia homes de Cadis, de Màlaga i de Santander, però també de l’Escala, de Sant Feliu de Guíxols, de Vilanova i, sobretot, de Maó. La majoria procedien de riques famílies de mercaders o de capitans de vaixell, però també n’hi havia que eren mariners abandonats pels seus patrons a la costa africana, o fins i tot algun que compaginava el tràfic d’esclaus amb la pirateria. Aquests factors negrers compraven els esclaus a baix preu a la costa africana i els guardaven empresonats en barracots abans d’embarcar-los cap a les plantacions de Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brasil, l’illa de la Reunió, etcètera. Molts esclavistes van morir a la costa africana: de malària, de disenteria, en enfrontaments armats o, fins i tot, enverinats; uns pocs van quedar-se a l’Àfrica, i d’altres van retornar. Such a great read. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Finished it in a couple of days. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Would probably read it again at some point.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Will be looking for more from this author.

Pretty good overall. I liked the main character, though some of the side plots were just okay. A solid 4 stars from me.
