Overview: Nicht erst seit der Verfilmung ist das Romanwerk J.R.R. Tolkiens -- Der Hobbit und Der Herr der Ringe -- zu einem kulturellen Phänomen von überragender Breitenwirkung geworden. Tolkiens ganzes Leben war der Schöpfung jener fiktiven Welt gewidmet, die mit ihren Völkern, ihren Mythen und ihrer breit angelegten Historie den Boden für die Abenteuer der Hobbits bereitet. Die Tiefe dieser Welt erschließt sich aber erst, wenn man die vielen zum Teil fragmentarischen Aufzeichnungen studiert, die ausschließlich nach Tolkiens Tod herausgegeben wurden. Eine kleine Zusammenstellung aus dem reichen Fundus dieser Materialien bietet Das Tolkien Lesebuch. Der erste Abschnitt gibt einen Einblick in die Entstehung von Von den ersten Augenblicken der Initialzündung wie zum Beispiel dem Lied von Earendel (der später zu Elronds Vater wurde) bis hin zu zentralen Mythen wie etwa der Geschichte von Luthien und Beren, dem legendären Vorbild für Aragorn und Arwen. Im zweiten Abschnitt lernt man den Mensch Tolkien besser kennen, nicht zuletzt anhand seiner auch heute noch wunderbar lesbaren Briefe. Der dritte Abschnitt richtet sein Augenmerk auf das dritte Zeitalter von Mittelerde, dessen Ende Der Herr der Ringe schildert. Im letzten Abschnitt erfährt man von den letzten Lebensjahren Tolkiens.Das Tolkien-Lesebuch ist eine Zusammenstellung bereits bekannter Materialen, es bietet unter anderem Ausschnitte aus den Romanen selbst, aus Das Silmarillion, der Tolkien-Biografie, den Briefen und aus Das Buch der Verschollenen Geschichten. Dabei werden allerdings viele Passagen -- ohne Erklärung -- aus dem Zusammenhang gerissen, so dass sie verwirrend und unverständlich bleiben müssen. Tolkien-Kennern bietet der Band nichts Neues. Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Would probably read it again at some point.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. Still a good book.
