In primul rând, liberalismul și conservatorismul dizident la care aderasem nu oferea nicio garanție serioasă in fața unei derive naționaliste. Eu, desigur, eram antinaționalist, dar aceasta a fost o opțiune personală, o chestiune de gust moral. Liberalismul este clasificat drept o variantă a „universalismului” occidental, dar in mod eronat. Separarea politicului de economic, a societății civile de stat face imposibil orice „universalism” și leagă statul de o legitimare socială care, inevitabil, invocă o comunitate prepolitică, de obicei națiunea.” G. M. TAMÁS (n.1949), s-a născut la Cluj in 1948. Studii de filologie clasică si filosofie la Bucuresti si Cluj. Retrogradat din poziția de redactor la cea de corector la un săptaminal literar din Cluj , dupa ce, din 1974, i s-a interzis – cu citeva rare excepții – să mai publice si a inceput să fie harțuit de Securitate, părăseste in cele din urma România. Din 1979 a predat filosofia la Facultatea de Litere din Budapesta, fiind concediat in 1981 pentru scrierile sale clandestine si proteste ilegale. A fost unul dintre liderii disidenței maghiare. Ales deputat in 1989, va părasi viața politică in 1994 si partidul liberal in 1999. Incepind cu 1991 a fost director al Institutului de Filosofie al Academiei Maghiare de Stiințe.
