Overview: إن مؤلفات عهد الاستعمار حول المغرب، لا تزال تؤشر في أذهان الأجانب، إن الباحث الأمريكي يتسرع في جمع المعلومات حول ما في المنطقة دون أن يكون مؤهلاً لنقدها والتمييز بين أنواعها. يتهافت على الفرضيات التي يتحفظ حتى أصحابها عند تقديمها فيأخذ كحقائق نهائية. يجهل العربية والبربرية ويهدف إلى فهم الحالة القائمة فلا يهمه من التاريخ إلا ما هو لازم أكاديمياً وما يسهل إدراك المشكلات الاجتماعية والسياسية، فيستهويه ما كتبه الفرنسيون ويعطيه قيمة أعلى من قيمته. والباحث الأمريكي ليس إلا مثلاً على كل الدارسين الأجانب. وقد رأى الدكتور عبد الله العروي من موقعه كأستاذ في إحدى الجامعات الأمريكية، والحالة هذه أنه من المفيد تقديم نظرية مغربية على تاريخ المغرب، مقتصراً على تقديم تأويلات جديدة للأحداث والوقائع. ناقداً مؤرخين عديدين بحدة وصرامة. وعلى ضوء ذلك يمكن القول بأن الكتاب هو مراجعة نقدية للمؤلفات حول تاريخ المغرب، وهو أيضاً قراءة للماضي المغربي، لذا سيلحظ القارئ فقدان الكتاب لوحدة الأسلوب، وعلى نحو آخر، تغير الهجة في بعض المواضيع، لكن في كل صفحاته سيبقى هناك سؤال واحد مطروح حو مصداقية ما كتب في هذا التاريخ وحوله.بالإضافة إلى ذلك سيلحظ القارئ عملية سردية واضحة للأحداث والوقائع والتي لم تكن في حقيقة الأمر هي هدف المؤلف بقدر ما كان هدفه إظهار العلاقة التي تربط اليوم المواطن المغربي المهتم بالمستقبل بمجموع ما في المغرب. وموضوعات هذا البحث جاءت على مدى فصول الكتاب الخامس عشر. الفصل الأول: البحث عن الأوليات. الفصل الثاني: من استعمار إلى آخر. الفصل الثالث: غزو بعد آخر. الفصل الرابع: المغرب يستعيد استقلاله. هذا بالإضافة إلى مقدمة حول دواقع هذا البحث وخلاصة أوجز فيها الباحث ما انتهى إليه بحثه هذا والذي مثل القسم الأول من الكتاب من مجمل تاريخ المغرب في عهد التبعية إلى وسط القرن الثاني الهجري وأواسط القرن الثامن الميلادي.أما في القسم الثاني من الكتاب فتابع ما بدأ دراسته في القسم الأول من هذا الكتاب حول مجمل تاريخ المغرب. فبعد أن أنهى القسم الأول بفصله الرابع والذي كان حول تاريخ الفترة التي نعم فيها المغرب باستقلاله يتابع في هذا القسم تاريخ المغرب في عهد الوحدة والسطوة إلى أواسط القرن الثامن الهجري الرابع عشر ميلادي. وتوزعت هذه المتابعة في هذا القسم ضمن فصول خمسة والتي جاءت عناوينها تباعاً على الشكل التالي: دعوة وتجار، وحدة المغرب: محاولة الفاطميين. وحدة المغرب: محاولة المرابطين. وحدة المغرب: إنجاز الموحدين. انهيار الوحدة القسرية.أما القسم الثالث من الكتاب فخصصه للحديث عن أمور عدة منها وصفه في الفصل العاشر والحادي عشر والثاني عشر لدول عسكرية تختلف في بنيتها الأساسية عن الإمارات والإمبراطوريات والممالك التي تم دراستها في الفصل الثاني، أما الفصل الثالث عشر فخصصه للحديث عن تحطيم الدولة بالقوة، تجربة الجزائر، وتحطيم الدولة بالدبلوماسية: تجربة تونس الوضع الدبلوماسي. الاصلاحات، التأزم، والاختناق، وأيضاً تحدث عن تجربة المغرب الأقصى الضغط العسكري والاقتصادي وعدم جدوى الاصلاحات وتتبع في الفصل الرابع عشر والذي جاء تحت عنوان: استبعاد واستقلال بداية المجتمع الجديد: القاعدة العقارية والتجهيز الاقتصادي والنظام الإداري أما الفصل الخامس عشر والأخير فخصصه للحديث عن فكرة التعليل الاجتماعي والفكري والثقافي والبحث عن أصل التطور.

I have mixed feelings about this one. It had some good moments, but the overall plot felt a bit disjointed in the second half. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.
