L'Italia si avvia, ora, raggiunti i parametri fissati nel 1992, ad entrare nell'Unione monetaria europea. La deprecatio temporis, la sfiducia degli italiani nei confronti delle proprie istituzioni, la consapevolezza - diffusa fin dall'Ottocento - del ritardo italiano e della maggiore maturità di Francia e Regno Unito hanno agito come molla potente per il risanamento finanziario.
