Overview: Polska kultura wizualna wciąż jest obszarem słabo rozpoznanym i niedowartościowanym. Obraz historycznie ustępuje znaczenia słowu, nieczęsto stając się przedmiotem rozważań teoretycznych, wizje i widzenia są raczej domeną literatury, kompetencje wizualne społeczeństwa polskiego są zwykle nisko oceniane, a jego praktyki bywają określane jako estetyczna nędza, nadmiar lub nuda. Dwutomowy zbiór, obejmujący (1) teksty i obrazy źródłowe (od Abramowskiego po Hansena, od Rydet po Leśmiana) wraz z komentarzami oraz (2) autorskie hasła dotyczące praktyk widzenia (od obrazu do widowni, od bilbordu do melodramatu, od Pałacu po podróbkę), jest próbą zmierzenia się z tymi uprzedzeniami. Staramy się zatem nie tylko zaprezentować, ale również zbudować pewną wizję teorii i praktyk kultury wizualnej w nowoczesnej Polsce. Intencją naszego badania było rozpoznanie zasobów i potencjału polskiej refleksji dotyczącej widzenia, prowadzonej przede wszystkim w wieku XX, ale osadzonej też w tekstach i praktykach dziewiętnastowiecznych, oraz próba namysłu nad nimi w kontekście z jednej strony języka dyscypliny, jaką są badania kultury wizualnej, a z drugiej – form i problemów współczesnej kultury polskiej. W jaki sposób myślano u nas o widzeniu, obrazach i widowniach? Jakie działania artystyczne służyły do wyrażania i problematyzowania tych kwestii? Jak widzenie i obrazowanie są praktykowane na co dzień, jak przejawiały się i przejawiają w działaniach potocznych? Zgodnie z podejściem „archeologicznym” zakładamy, że rozpoznania historyczno-kulturowe mogą prowadzić w istocie do – innego czy nowego – rozumienia współczesności, a obrazy i wizualne idee z przeszłości otwierają drogę do dzisiejszych przedstawień i praktyk.

Pretty good overall. I liked the main character, though some of the side plots were just okay. Still a good book.

An average read for me. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. It's fine if you have nothing else to read.

I have mixed feelings about this one. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.
