Overview: Barocco, ovvero trionfo dell’amplificazione, e dell’orpello, disteso su un disperato vuoto di contenuti: questo, piú o meno, il senso delle condanne sommarie che si sono perpetuate senza soluzione di continuità dall’Arcadia fino a Benedetto Croce, attraverso l’Illuminismo e il Romanticismo. Il pieno Novecento, per tanti versi cosí simile al Seicento, per la sua natura caotica, disillusa ed effimera, appare invece in grado di coglierne l’intima essenza e di offrire del Barocco un giudizio piú equilibrato. In realtà, nell’anima di questo periodo tanto contraddittorio quanto affascinante convivono due aspetti sicuramente opposti, eppure complementari. L’uno, dispersivo, risolto nel senso di incostanza e di labilità, negli esiti eccentrici e vacui, nella spettacolarità effimera, nell’amore per la profusione iperbolica; l’altro, unitario, teso a inseguire l’armonia perduta a causa della crisi dell’aristotelismo e degli scismi religiosi, e a tentare una impossibile riconquista mediante l’allestimento di enciclopedie, musei e collezioni in cui si pretendeva di riassumere l’intero sapere umano. Questo volume ha l’ambizione di illustrare entrambe le facce del periodo in questione, nella piena consapevolezza che non sia possibile comprendere per intero il Barocco limitandosi all’ambito, pur ampio, della sola letteratura. Viene quindi dispiegata una ricognizione a tutto campo – dalla pittura alla scultura, dall’architettura alla musica –, su scala europea e, in diacronia, dal Manierismo al Rococò, momento quest’ultimo indagato con grande ampiezza e con prospettive inedite anche in sede letteraria.

Glad someone recommended this to me. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

It was just alright. It had some good moments, but the overall plot felt a bit disjointed in the second half. Just right down the middle.
