Overview: De la vida de Saxo, llamado Gramático por cronistas posteriores a causa de su vasto conocimiento de la lengua latina, sólo conocemos unos pocos datos que él mismo nos ofrece en su obra. Debió de pertenecer a una noble familia seelandesa muy próxima a los círculos dirigentes del antiguo reino de Dinamarca. En los primeros nueve libros Saxo nos habla de la historia de Dinamarca desde sus albores hasta la aparición del Cristianismo y en los restantes narra la historia de la Dinamarca cristiana, centrándose especialmente en la figura del arzobispo Absalón, su mentor.El primer bloque resulta especialmente atractivo para los estudiosos de la antigua mitología y literatura nórdicas por la abundante información que suministra acerca del repertorio épico y mítico de los pueblos escandinavos, y así los nueve primeros libros de su Historia danesa incluyen episodios y narraciones que también nos han llegado transmitidos por las “sagas de los tiempos antiguos”, género literario de la Islandia medieval que ya ha sido divulgado merced a otros volúmenes de la Colección Libros de los Malos Tiempos con el fin de contribuir al conocimiento de las fuentes más importantes de la antigua literatura escandinava entre los lectores españoles. An average read for me. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.
