Overview: Belasting, bevolking en bezit in Gelre en Zutphen (1350-1550) beoogt een bijdrage te leveren aan de sociale geschiedenis van het hertogdom Gelre en Zutphen tijdens de late middeleeuwen. Van Schaïk maakt gebruik van de administratie van Gelderse hertogelijke directe belastingen uit de periode tot 1543, op grond waarvan de aandacht uit gaat naar demografische structuren en de sociale gelaagdheid van de Gelderse bevolking. De auteur kiest hiermee een andere, beperktere, invalshoek dan die van de meeste studies naar dit onderwerp: een brede sociaal-economische aanpak is niet gerealiseerd en in plaats daarvan is een groot gewicht toegekend aan het historische bronnenmateriaal. Deel I van het boek bevat dan ook een systematische bronnenkritiek waarbij de representativiteit en de volledigheid van de overgeleverde belastingregisters worden onderzocht. Glad someone recommended this to me. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. A solid 5/5 for me.

Not bad, but not my favorite. It had some good moments, but the overall plot felt a bit disjointed in the second half. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.
