Discover A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum: Murder in Ancient Rome by Emma Southon. Start reading today and explore ideas, insights, and experiences that stay with you.

Overview: An entertaining and informative look at the unique culture of crime, punishment, and killing in Ancient Rome In Ancient Rome, all the best stories have one thing in common—murder. Romulus killed Remus to found the city, Caesar was assassinated to save the Republic. Caligula was butchered in the theater, Claudius was poisoned at dinner, and Galba was beheaded in the Forum. In one 50-year period, 26 emperors were murdered. But what did killing mean in a city where gladiators fought to the death to sate a crowd? In A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Emma Southon examines a trove of real-life homicides from Roman history to explore Roman culture, including how perpetrator, victim, and the act itself were regarded by ordinary people. Inside Ancient Rome's darkly fascinating history, we see how the Romans viewed life, death, and what it means to be human.

Glad someone recommended this to me. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Would probably read it again at some point.

I was pleasantly surprised. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Would probably read it again at some point.

It was just alright. It felt a bit repetitive in the middle. Could have been shorter. A generous 3 stars.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Pretty good overall. I liked the main character, though some of the side plots were just okay. Still a good book.

Good, but not quite perfect. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Still a good book.

It was okay. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. It held my attention, even if a few things were a little predictable. A solid 4 stars from me.
