Overview: En 1979 paraissait le premier volume du Rabelais l'etude consacree au Pantagruel; en 1985, le tome 1 (du prologue au chapitre XXIV) et en 1990 le tome 2 (du chapitre XXV a la fin) de l'etude consacree au Tiers Livre, il est donc connu des Rabelaisants que Marc Berlioz a l'audace insensee de s'opposer ouvertement aux glossateurs qui enferment Rabelais dans une interpretation edifiee a la mesure de leur incuriosite, de leur incompetence ou de leurs prejuges, ces glossateurs fussent-ils consideres comme les plus eminents. Il s'oppose a eux sans retenue et sans les euphemismes d'usage, riant de leurs bevues non pas parce que ce sont des bevues (il en commet aussi) mais parce qu'elles sont enoncees d'un ton peremptoire; d'ou les traditionnelles petites represailles couillonniformes, parfaitement vaines. Car l'important reste pour lui qu'on reconsidere, qu'on reexamine encore et encore un texte que l'on croit avoir si bien et si totalement compris que certains n'hesitent pas, en fin de carriere surtout, a produire des vues d'ensemble, des Rabelais, des Francois Rabelais qui ne font que reprendre les erreurs d'interpretation les mieux mitonnees sans laisser place a la moindre remise en question. Or cette presente etude du Tiers Livre le demontre une fois de a chaque chapitre se revelent des intentions de Rabelais souvent fort eloignees de celles qu'on tient pour intangibles attendu qu'elles sont celles de la vue conventionnelle qui tire, comme on sait, toute son autorite de l'inlassable repetition. Marc Berlioz n'a cure de la convention; il reinterprete, degageant l'intention qui lui parait la plus plausible, la mieux fondee, sans toutefois pretendre rien donner qui soit definitif, incitant au contraire chacun a verifier, juger, discuter, reprenant frequemment a son compte la formule qu'emploie Cela, sauf meilleur jugement, toujours. Comme les precedentes, cette etude du Tiers Livre montre a l'evidence que l'on a grand tort, d'abord de tenir pour figee la comprehension du texte de Rabelais; ensuite de prendre pour guide tel mandarin qui donne ses propres limites a la comprehension de ce texte, limites dans lesquelles reste servilement chacun des sous-mandarins qu'il regit. Pretty good overall. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. I'd probably recommend it to a friend.

I was pleasantly surprised. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Will be looking for more from this author.

An average read for me. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. Just right down the middle.
