Overview: Imam Hanbali digelar Al-Hakam kerana dapat menghafaz lebih 700,000 hadis dan berpengetahuan mendalam mengenai ilmu hadis. Melayakkan beliau mengeluarkan fatwa dalam hukum Fikah. Imam Hanbali juga seorang yang sangat kuat beribadat, beliau sembahyang sunat 300 rakaat sehari semalam dan khatam Al-Quran seminggu sekali. Beliau sangat menghormati guru-gurunya. Ketika Imam Syafie menziarahinya di rumah, beliau segera bangun mengemaskan diri, menyambut kedatangan gurunya lalu diberikan tempat duduk yang tinggi sementara dia duduk di bawah. Imam Hanbali tidak gemar bergurau senda, lebih suka mendiamkan diri dan berfikir. Bercakap apabila menjawab soalan mengenai hukum agama. Suka bergaul dengan orang-orang miskin dan kurang bergaul dengan orang kaya dan orang-orang berpangkat.Khalifah Harun Ar-Rasyid pernah bertanya kepada Imam Syafie tentang orang yang layak menjadi Kadi di Yaman. Imam Syafie mencadangkan muridnya Imam Ahmad. Apabila Imam Ahmad mengunjungi Imam Syafie, beliau ditawarkan dengan jawatan tersebut tetapi ditolaknya dengan berkata ” Saya datang menemui tuan bukan untuk mendapatkan jawatan daripada khalifah”. Imam Hanbali terkenal dengan sikap pemurah. Jirannya pernah memberinya sepinggan anggur dibalasnya dengan gula, garam dan beberapa pinggan buah-buahan. Semasa pemerintahan Khalifah Al-Makmum bin Harun Ar-Rasyid, beliau menganut fahaman Muktazilah yang berpendapat Al-Quran itu makhluk yang bersifat baharu. Baginda memaksa ulama-ulama menerima pendapat itu tetapi Imam Hanbali menentangnya dengan mengatakan Quran itu kalamullah yang diwahyukan kepada Nabi Muhamad melalui malaikat Jibrail. Akibat penentangannya itu Imam Hanbali ditangkap lalu dipenjara kemudian disebat dengan rotan dalam memaksanya tunduk kepada fahaman Muktazilah. Beliau disebat dengan rotan sehingga kulitnya mengelupas dan keluar darah. Setelah khalifah Al Makmun meninggal dunia diganti khalifah Al Muktasyim. Beliau terus memenjarakan Imam Hanbali kerana melindungi fahaman Muktazilah. Sehinggalah Khalifah Al-Mutawakkil yang menganut mazhab Ahli sunnah wal jamaah berkuasa barulah Imam Hanbali dibebaskan. Dalam usaha memujuk Imam Hanbali, Khalifah Al-Mutawakkil menghadiahkan 10,000 dirham. Wang itu diambilnya tetapi kemudiannya disedekahkan kepada fakir miskin. Pada hari-hari tuanya Imam Hanbali menjadi tempat rujukan orang ramai khususnya di Baghdad. Dalam menentapkan hukum beliau lebih mengutamakan Al-Quran dan As-Sunnah dan pendapat para sahabat Rasulullah. Imam Hanbali meninggal dunia pada pagi hari Jumaat 12 Rabiul Awal tahun 241 hijrah bersamaan 855 masihi ketika berusia 77 tahun dan dikebumikan di Baghdad.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Would probably read it again at some point.
